The Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), with support from IPA Malawi and the International Food Poverty Research Institute (IFPRI), held a research symposium in Lilongwe. The European Union funded the symposium, the first of its kind for ECAMA. Mr. Henry Kachaje (President, ECAMA) and Thandika Mkandawire (London School of Economics) delivered the welcome and keynote addresses to more than 100 participants. Various researchers presented 33 papers on issues related to poverty alleviation.

The panelists discussed evidence-based interventions derived from nudges–incremental changes in behavior–which show promise in promoting savings habits among low-income populations.

IPA researcher Lasse Brune discussed recent data and research on savings among the poor and presented insights from impact evaluations of interventions and financial products designed to encourage savings among low-income households around the world.

IPA Peru, J-PAL, and LAC launched a three-week course and workshop on Experimental Impact Evaluation for policymakers of the Viceministry of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) and Industry within Peru’s Ministry of Production. Participants worked with researchers and J-PAL and IPA staff to develop evaluation designs and presented them to the Viceministry. Prior workshops in this series include an introductory course on impact evaluation and a design workshop.
