Research Scientist
WZB Berlin Social Science Center

Alex Scacco is a research scientist in the Institutions and Political Inequality unit at the WZB. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University and previously worked as an Assistant Professor at New York University. Alex's work focuses on comparative and ethnic politics and political violence, with a regional focus on sub-Saharan Africa. Her current book project, Anatomy of a Riot: Why Ordinary People Participate in Ethnic Violence, draws on original survey and interview data to unpack the relationship between poverty, membership in neighborhood-level social networks and the decision to participate in a series of deadly religious riots in contemporary Nigeria.

Alex's other research investigates the impact of grassroots-level peace-building interventions, the human costs of partition, the politics of ethnic identity change and compares methods for asking sensitive questions in survey research. Alex has done fieldwork in Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.
