Innovations for Poverty Action’s Right-Fit Evidence Unit (RFE) is seeking student volunteer applications to work on various engagements globally. If you’re excited about working with a global leader in evidence-based development and are more excited about getting directly involved helping partners figuring out how to use data to improve their work than running impact evaluations, we’d love to hear from you. You’ll likely get exposure to various organizations in a short period of time, as well as get involved with frontier thinking in the Monitoring and Evaluation space. Ideally, student volunteers would be interested in a long-term role with the RFE Unit after graduation.
Complementing IPA’s core business, the Right-Fit Evidence Unit at IPA is an advisory team helping organizations make learning-oriented M&E a reality in the development sector. In close collaboration with IPA’s sector programs and country office teams worldwide, the unit provides consulting and direct services to implementers, donors, and governments, with the goal of helping them to establish what data and evidence to gather, how to do it in a cost-effective way, and how to make the promise of data-informed programmatic decisions a reality.
The role of the student volunteer may involve the preparation and facilitation of workshops or trainings for clients, the write-up of reports and briefs, the review of client M&E documents and plans, ad-hoc compilation of relevant literature and the development of future engagements etc. The specific projects and duties will depend both on the candidate and on the specific needs at the time that the student volunteer will join, but the following are possible projects:
- Advising a foundation and its partners looking to scale programs to strengthen youth participation in democratic governance in the Philippines. The student volunteer would advise on the existing evidence and support with the development of theories of change and MEL frameworks.
- Supporting partners to roll out L1P-aligned payment systems with MEL and research evidence. The student volunteer would work with a foundation, financial service providers and other organizations to develop and implement a learning agenda to inform and improve the use of interoperable payment systems globally. The work might be focused in Tanzania, Myanmar or other countries.
- Providing technical advice to a community of practice of early childhood education providers in East and Southern Africa. The student volunteer would support a foundation and the implementing partners with the execution of their shared learning agenda and the facilitation of learning and reflection activities.
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, social science, or a related field completed. We would typically expect student volunteers who would be in the middle or the end of a Masters Degree.
- Strong academic records from top universities, including coursework on Quantitative Methods and International Development
- Strong writing and communication skills
- Fluency in English and either French or Spanish
- Flexible, self-motivating, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently and a team player
- Previous exposure to international development work, including some work in a developing country
- Familiarity with M&E and/or randomized controlled trials preferred
- Interest in a career in the evidence space in International Development
- Previous experience in management consulting is a plus
