Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) seeks to appoint a Research Associate to support the implementation of the Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence (GAGE) programme, a nine year longitudinal study with impact evaluations in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Jordan. The programme aims to generate new evidence on ‘what works’ to transform the lives of adolescent girls and boys to enable them to move out of poverty and exclusion, and fast-track social change. GAGE research involves the most vulnerable adolescents, including adolescent refugees, adolescents with disabilities, those out of school, married girls and adolescent mothers.
Across the focal countries, the GAGE programme will collect data from over 18,000 adolescents and their families, covering a range of capabilities including health, education, psychosocial wellbeing and economic empowerment. The Research Associate will join a consortium led by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) and including several top-tier academic, policy and research institutions.
The successful candidate will work closely with lead academics and researchers from the GAGE programme, and their partnering organisations, including the World Bank, UN agencies, leading donor foundations and implementing NGOs, thus paving the way for future careers in academic, private-sector, or public-sector roles.
We are looking for a minimum commitment period of two years for this position with a possibility for a longer-term position for exceptional candidates. The candidate will be primarily based in Dhaka with regional and international travel expected to oversee fieldwork in both Bangladesh and Jordan.
- Managing day-to-day research activities, from planning to implementation, and monitoring quality. This includes training and supervising both field-based and data operations teams
- Documenting all activities related to the project
- Refining survey questionnaires and programming them on SurveyCTO
- Supervising data collection and data-entry processes, and ensuring high quality of the data at both stages
- Ensuring ready access to all data for faculty researchers and/or supervisors
- Assisting in data cleaning and preliminary analysis
- Providing timely updates and responses to PIs, partner organizations, and participating in meetings with key stakeholders
- Maintaining accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary
- Preparing progress and results reports to PIs, research partners, and funding agencies, and sharing them in a timely manner
- Preparing key information for the GAGE programme office for presentations and publications
- Attending weekly update calls with partners and GAGE programme office that likely will occur outside normal office hours due to time-zone differences.
- Monitoring project expenditures and timeline
- Ensuring that all team members follow necessary protocols and procedures
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in economics, public policy, or other quantitative social science disciplines (Master’s degree preferred)
- Quantitative Skills: Strong technical understanding of economics and econometrics required. Demonstrated proficiency in Stata and SurveyCTO, and experience with data management, data cleaning, and regression analysis
- A minimum of 1-year of work experience is required. Experience managing field staff in developing countries strongly preferred
- Excellent management and organizational skills; ability to manage last minute field work changes and navigate sometimes stressful working conditions; ability to successfully complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines, required
- Communication Skills: Attention to detail and advanced writing and presentation skills are required
- Language: English fluency required; Bangla language an asset
