Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) Colombia seeks a Research Associate to join a dynamic and committed team in Bogotá. Our projects bring together researchers and decision-makers to design, rigorously evaluate, and refine solutions to improve people’s lives. The Research Associate will work closely with the IPA country office staff, principal investigators, and implementing partners to execute high-quality projects. This position is contingent upon project approval and donor funding.
As an ideal candidate, you not only have a rock solid technical foundation in impact evaluation methodology, but you can also independently guide and direct the activities that happen both upstream and downstream of any rigorous, randomized evaluation (i.e. mapping theory of change, measurement design and piloting, data analysis, results communication, etc.). You enjoy leading high-performing teams that drive the production of the highest quality research for our clients and partners. You excel in solving problems using clear, strategic, and creative thinking. You have a strong social acumen, and are excited about the opportunity to broaden, deepen, and manage meaningful relationships with high-level clients and partners across the public and private sector.
This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain extensive hands‐on research experience and significant management responsibility in a vibrant organization undertaking cutting‐edge development research as well as the opportunity to work in close collaboration with high-level policy partners. Key areas of involvement will include: coordinating and collaborating with implementing partners and the PI team, designing survey questionnaires, recruiting, training and managing survey teams, designing and supervising logistics for the field activities, cleaning and analyzing survey data, assisting in the writing of project reports and policy memos, and liaising with key government stakeholders.
- Manage relationships with investigators in multiple research institutions, funders and implementing partners to ensure successful projects;
- Plan, pilot, and supervise survey implementation, quality assurance, data cleaning, data analysis and other activities related to rigorous impact evaluation implementation;
- Design and implement monitoring systems to monitor and measure intervention program take-up and compliance;
- Work with the research team, IPA staff in Colombia and in the United States to analyze the data and interpret the findings;
- Oversee the quality of client and partner deliverables;
- Produce reports for donors, researchers and other stakeholders;
- Manage the project finances including tracking all expenses to ensure costs are within project budgets;
- Hire, train, and manage the field teams that conduct data collection.
- Degree in economics, political science, public health, public policy, or related fields (quantitative background preferred). A graduate degree is a plus;
- Strong analytical abilities, both quantitative and qualitative. Mastery of impact evaluation methodology and applications;
- Excellent management and organizational skills and ability to work independently (at least 1 year of research or management experience preferred);
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English, including ability to effectively communicate;
- Strong quantitative skills and very good knowledge of Stata required; programming and other technical knowledge a strong plus;
- Willingness to frequently travel within Colombia;
- Demonstrated ability to manage relationships with partner organizations;
- Capability to manage multiple tasks efficiently;
- Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service;
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
