The Controller will be a key member of the finance team and will be integral to the achievement of the financial goals of the business. IPA is seeking an energetic, motivated self-starter. The person will assist in planning, developing and implementing policies, procedures and accounting controls. The Controller manages the Headquarters accounting & finance functions and provides guidance and support to the global finance functions. The Controller is responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are in place to ensure compliance with the US generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and to mitigate organizational risk. The Controller is responsible for being proactive in keeping up to date with all new accounting pronouncements, proper treatment of new revenue sources, and any other developments in the compliance space that could impact IPA. S/he operates as a strong deputy to the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO) with respect to the finance function. S/he will ensure the accounts are prepared in line with accounting standards and support management and donor reporting requirements. The Controller reports to the CFAO.
- Lead by example in managing team of accounting professionals, driving results through the use of data, feedback and accountability in a supportive learning environment that encourages staff engagement and professional growth.
- Oversee AP, AR, Payroll, and General Ledger functions.
- Manage month end close process including: supervision &/or preparation of monthly journal entries and account reconciliations and tracking of team’s deliverables ensuring progressively faster monthly closes.
- Ensure payments and other disbursements are made in an accurate and timely manner.
- Coordinate deliverables with the Reporting, Financial Planning and Analysis Manager for monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting and variance analysis (balance sheet, income statement, cash flows, and cash flow forecasts) for timely and accurate reporting. Integrate cash flow forecasting into monthly cycle.
- Produce and monitor reports on team metrics to evaluate transaction volume, team performance and customer service effectiveness.
- Implement and maintain strong accounting and related financial policies, processes and control systems ensuring compliance with GAAP, the Internal Revenue Code, FASB, other applicable federal, state and local laws, donor restrictions and best practices. Make recommendations for changes to the CFAO.
- Create and deliver trainings on accounting related topics to accounting and organizational staff.
- Manage annual audits, including liaising with auditors, coordinating scheduling for field work and meetings, preparation and/or review of audit materials and schedules, and managing deliverable deadlines with internal contributors and auditors.
- Coordinate preparation of Form 990 and supporting schedules. Prepare periodic tax and regulatory filings, ensuring accuracy, proper internal review and timely submission to appropriate agencies.
- Audit internal work flow to ensure that all accounting transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with procedures.
- Serve as primary administrator for various accounting systems, managing the general ledger chart of accounts, secondary administrator and user profiles, and coordinating with system vendors on critical issues.
- Develop recommendations for accounting-related technical solutions that facilitate compliance and ease-of-use for end users and accounting staff, including proposed system changes and training as appropriate.
- Participate in the annual budget process and other budgets and forecasts as required.Assist CFAO with a variety of tasks and projects as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and qualified CPA or equivalent.
- 10+ years’ professional financial experience either public accounting experience (specifically with non-profit clients) or public/private mix where you are currently working at an international non-profit. At least 5 years leading a team of at least 3 direct reports.
- Fully proficient in non-profit accounting, thorough knowledge of US GAAP and current accounting best practice, including upcoming regulatory changes to reporting requirements.
- Experience with US and foreign government and institutional grant accounting and reporting. Experience with Federal Single Audits.
- Hands-on experience in accounting software, preferably NetSuite.
- Knowledge of ADP Payroll System.
- Experience with acting as change agent for business process improvements and actively engaging with organization for ongoing efficiency gains
- Proficient in Microsoft Office – particularly strong Excel skills (pivot tables, vlookups, if statements).
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across all levels of the organization and internationally.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills, an effective time manager and multitasker.
- Excellent flexibility coupled with a strong work ethic to match the multiple priorities and responsibilities.
- Excellent technical, oral and written communication skills.
