On July 7th, the Philippines Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) hosted International Care Ministries (ICM) and IPA Philippines to present preliminary results of IPA’s impact evaluation of ICM’s “Transform” program. This program provides a values, health, and livelihood intervention training program to Filipino ultra-poor households. Dean Karlan presented preliminary results along with David Sutherland, CEO of ICM.

On July 7th, Dean Karlan was the guest speaker at the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Foundation, Inc’s learning session, “Walang Maiiwan sa Laylayan” (Leaving No One Behind in the Margins). This was attended by high-level staff from BPI and other banks in the Philippines. Dean shared evidence from impact evaluations on financial inclusion from around the world and also expounded on innovative solutions that can be explored by the Philippine banking sector.

This 2-day event was hosted by the Tanzanian Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) and coordinated by Twaweza and Innovations for Poverty Action-Tanzania. Dr.Mashinda, Director General of COSTECH, gave an overview of the importance of using evidence to inform policy to an audience of government officials, other policymakers, and the press.

On June 21st, in collaboration with the International Growth Centre (IGC), IPA hosted an event on electricity and water utility provision research. The overall objective of the event was to create a forum to discuss how research could help inform policies on utility provision in Zambia. To motivate this discussion, case studies of projects recently supported by IPA and IGC were presented, and a panel of policy-makers in Zambia shared their views.

IPA Kenya attended the Development Impact Evaluation division (DIME)’s forum on Using Evidence to Improve Policy and Program Designs in Nairobi, and presented IPA evaluations in the energy and sanitation sectors that focused on maximizing large-scale infrastructure investments.
