From November 27-29, 2019, Education Evidence for Action (EE4A), a coalition of civil society organizations, academics, and government officials under the Ministry of Education (MoE), will host its biannual policy conference in Machakos, Kenya. EE4A has previously organized two policy conferences in 2015 and 2017, and its third conference in 2019 will serve as a proactive strategy to link education evidence to policy and action.

On July 23, IPA Kenya facilitated a policy opportunity matchmaking workshop as part of the 8th Annual EASST Summit. The workshop was attended by EASST fellows, NIERA alumni, CEGA affiliates, partner organizations, and Kenya government officials. The objective of this workshop was to provide a platform for these groups to connect and start new scale-up and impact evaluation consulting opportunities that will be partially funded by EASST through its “Policy Engagement Grant” program. The session focused on four sectors: education, health, agriculture, and financial inclusion. Participants broke into sector group discussions to map out their common areas of research interest, potential opportunities for collaboration, and ultimately come up with proposals for EASST funding on the identified areas of policy engagement.

The Summit showcased locally generated research alongside the research of U.S. based academics while facilitating a dialogue between policymakers, practitioners, and researchers regarding opportunities for evidence-informed policymaking in East Africa.

On Thursday, June 27, Dr. Angela Ofori-Atta, Prof. Dean Karlan, and Prof. Christopher Udry presented results from the first randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a CBT intervention in Ghana. The study evaluated the impact of a relatively low-cost group-based CBT intervention on developing resilience and eliminating negative thought distortions among poor households in rural and peri-urban areas. The research also aims to understand if CBT helps equip people with the mental health stability and positive outlook necessary to make successful investments and if it can be used as a therapy to reduce intimate partner violence.

On June 19 and 20, the Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE) program convened high-profile academics and policymakers to answer the question: "How can education systems be reformed to deliver better learning for all?" The conference featured presentations by researchers on three IPA-implemented projects: Andrew Zeitlin presented preliminary results from the Rwanda teacher pay-for-performance study; Torsten Figueiredo Walter presented findings from the Zambia teacher allocation study, and Syeda Farwa Fatima presented results from the Ghana Fast-Track Transformational Teacher Training (FTTT) study.

On May 20, IPA Peru and J-PAL LAC co-hosted a dissemination event where researchers Erica Field (Duke University) and Ursula Aldana (Instituto de Estudios Peruanos) presented baseline findings from “Leaders in Action,” a program that trains local leaders to become community health volunteers and raise awareness of gender-based violence (GBV) in their villages, to a policy audience at the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP).
