From March 10-14, The Yangon University of Economics (YUE), the South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics (SANDEE) – International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Duke University (DU), and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) jointly organized a workshop on “Environmental and Natural Resource Economics” in Myanmar.

Objectives

• Introduce researchers to the scientific literature on the economics of environment and energy
• Familiarize researchers with quantitative tools and techniques for conducting empirical research on environmental and natural resource economics
• Teach researchers how to conduct non-market valuation to estimate the costs and benefits of environmental and energy projects
• Teach researchers about the nuts and bolts of techniques to measure the impacts of programmes and policies and apply causal inference
• Provide hands-on trainings for conducting empirical research on environmental economics

The workshop provided practical training on both theoretical aspects as well as techniques for conducting empirical research in economics in general and environmental economics in particular.

Who Can Apply?

Researchers (Myanmar nationals) currently based in Myanmar with at least a master’s degree in economics, natural resources and environmental management, business and environment, or similar academic fields, along with a minimum of two years of research experience, can apply. Some background and understanding of economics is necessary given the workshop’s focus. Quantitative skills and previous research experience would be beneficial. A strong command of both spoken and written English is necessary. Women and junior to mid-career professionals teaching economics at various universities in Myanmar are encouraged to apply. Candidates with a PhD or working towards or with future plans for a PhD degree are encouraged.

How To Apply

To be considered for the workshop, please review the submission procedure and submit the application form online by 20 February 2020. Your application should include the following (with one-inch page margin and 12-point font): a cover letter (no more than one page) describing how this workshop would help you in your ongoing research work or future career, and a short CV (no more than one page) highlighting your academic background and research and teaching experience.

Funding

The workshop will be fully residential and the organizers will provide accommodation, meals for the workshop’s duration, and necessary course materials. The organizers will also reimburse reasonable travel costs for the most direct and economical mode of transport from your current location to Yangon upon submission of original receipts. Participants need to cover their additional personal expenses and healthcare costs if any.

Selection Process

A total of 15 participants will be invited to the workshop. Selection of the participants will be based on prior background and academic qualifications.
