Fall Intern - Philippines

IPA seeks a fall intern to assist in designing, implementing, and monitoring various microfinance evaluation projects in the Philippines. The intern will be based in Manila and work closely with partner organizations. The responsibilities will include developing project documents and training manuals, developing field surveys, and assisting the field work.
Requirements include a basic understanding of randomized trials, basic programming in Stata or other database software, ability to read and understand academic literature from economics.

Project Associate - Kenya

IPA and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (JPAL) are seeking a Project Associate to work with a Kenyan NGO and a team of US-based academics on two research projects. The first project is an evaluation of a program to provide small farmers with fertilizer and high-yield producing maize. The second project is a program to study the business decisions of small shopkeepers, and to pilot and evaluate several small scale interventions targeted at small retail
establishments. The Project Associate will be based in Western Kenya.
Responsibilities will include implementing data quality controls and coordinating data entry as well as hiring and coordinating survey staff, overseeing field activities, meeting with government officials and preparing reports for US-based researchers.
Successful candidates will have a Bachelors or Masters degree, some experience with statistical analysis packages such as Stata, and excellent interpersonal skills. Ideally, the position will start in October/November, 2008, and we are looking for a minimum commitment of 9-12 months. A stipend will be provided to cover living expenses and covers health and travel
expenses.

Project Coordinator - Mali

IPA is seeking a qualified applicant for the Project Coordinator position to join its research team in Mali. The Project Coordinator will assist the Principal Investigator in designing and implementing impact evaluation projects as well as assisting on various organizational tasks. Responsibilities include: conducting field work for potential projects, assisting in writing grant proposals, conducting data cleaning/analysis, working with partner organizations to design potential evaluations, and working with IPA headquarters to manage IPA's presence in Mali.
An ideal candidate should possess a Master's Degree in economics, public affairs, public administration or in other related fields, have experience in social science field research and be highly proficient in both spoken and written French. Familiarity with randomized controlled trials and advanced knowledge in STATA are preferable. A candidate should also have excellent organizational, writing, and communication skills.

Project Assistant - Puebla, Mexico

IPA has a short-term Project Assistant position available working on the evaluation of a micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) mentoring program in Puebla, Mexico. The successful candidate will help in the development, testing, and implementation of a survey targeting principal decision makers in over 400 firms in the state of Puebla. The Project Assistant will also provide support for data analysis and implementation efforts, including monitoring of the mentoring visits.
Ideal candidates will have experience with survey implementation and program evaluation. Additionally, they will possess excellent management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies and to work independently; familiarity with social science research; and a demonstrated interest in the evaluation of development programs. Candidates should be highly proficient in both spoken and written Spanish, with the ability to function comfortably in a business environment.

Responsibilities include coordinating with a local NGO in developing the evaluation procedure and protocols, training the field staff, and monitoring the project implementation. The Project Associate will also be involved in assisting designing and implementing other evaluation projects.

Research Coordinator

Seeking a Research Coordinator to work in conjunction with Innovations for Poverty Action, Jameel Poverty Action Lab, and stickK.com to coordinate randomized trials on behavior modification through commitment contracts. StickK.com promotes healthier, happier living by helping individuals and groups make and fulfill commitments to improve their lives. StickK.com does this by providing an easy mechanism for individuals to post financial commitments to achieve goals such as weight loss, cessation of smoking, training for marathons, completion of a task on time, etc.
The research coordinator will be based in either New Haven, CT or New York, NY, and will be responsible for communicating with the Scientific Advisory Board to coordinate with stickK.com, as well as to analyze in-house data on everything from site design, contract terms, marketing, etc. The research coordinator will work directly with Dean Karlan (economics professor at Yale University) and Ian Ayres (law professor at Yale University), as well as the full-time staff and CEO in New York City.
Requirements include comfort with statistical analysis, a basic understanding of randomized trials, basic programming in Stata or other database software, ability to read and understand academic literature from psychology and economics, and comfort working in a young enterprise environment.
