On March 8, IPA and J-PAL organized a roundtable discussion at the 2022 Fragility Forum with a group of leading academics researching effective strategies for combating gang rule and improving citizen security. The roundtable facilitated a discussion on:

  • Lessons learned from research on strategies to combat criminal and gang governance, drawing on practical examples from recent and ongoing collaborations with governments and civil society in Latin America;
  • Practical applications of this research for improving and innovating effective programs in low-, middle-, and high-income country contexts;
  • Reflecting how research on complex security topics has evolved over the past decade, highlighting innovations in design and measurement that are pushing the field forward; and
  • Laying out a forward-looking research agenda focused on current evidence gaps and emerging security threats

The session bridged the gap between research and practice by connecting leading academics investigating some of the most pressing security challenges of the 21st century with policymakers, practitioners, and donors, who are making the critical decisions on security, governance, and institution building in conflict and violence-affected settings.
