Scale Up Activities

The Deworm the World Initiative works to expand school-based deworming globally by providing technical assistance, coordinating strategic support, and advocating for large scale and sustainable school-based deworming programs.

To date, DtW has reached over 37 million children in 27 countries around the world.  Our work to massively scale-up school-based deworming programs globally includes:

  • Providing in-depth technical assistance to launch new government programs reaching over 23.7 million children
We have supported sustainable government action to reach 3.6 million children in Kenya, 2.1 million children in Andhra Pradesh, India, and 17 million children in Bihar, India. Most recently, we supported government efforts targeting 3.6 million children in Delhi, India.  We are currently supporting the launch of sustainable school-based deworming programs in additional areas, including Ogun State, Nigeria and Liberia.  Our technical assistance is specifically tailored to each country, enabling governments to develop large-scale, national programs strategically targeting at-risk areas.
  • Coordinating strategic support, including technical and financial assistance
We facilitate drug donations and have coordinated strategic support in Cape Verde, Central Africa Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, India, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, São Tomé & Príncipe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, and Yemen.  For example, in The Gambia, we coordinated technical assistance for prevalence surveying across the entire country, resulting in a five-year strategic implementation plan.
  • Advocating for a global policy shift to expand school-based deworming to millions of new children
We work with governments and development partners to increase recognition of school-based deworming as an important strategy for improving health and education outcomes for school-age children.  Recent policy milestones include the recognition of school-based deworming as a significant contributor to the Millennium Development Goals and achievement of Education for All by the Global Partnership for Education (formerly Fast Track Initiative).
